The right number
Why interior surface — and not footprint.
From above, you see your pool’s footprint — about 512 sq ft for a 16×32. But resurfacing covers the walls too. Contractors price on interior surface area: footprint + (perimeter × average depth). That same 16×32 with a 96 ft perimeter and 5 ft average depth has about 992 sq ft of interior surface — nearly double the footprint. If an online estimate ignored your walls, it was wrong before it started.
Resurfacing covers every inch water touches: the walls are usually a bit less than half the job on a typical pool, and skipping them is how online estimates go wrong.
Published industry rates run $6–$8/sq ft (HomeGuide, 2025-04-25) for plaster, $7–$10/sq ft (HomeGuide, 2025-04-25) for quartz, and $7–$15/sq ft (HomeGuide, 2025-04-25) for pebble per square foot of interior surface. Multiply honestly and you are in the neighborhood; measure and you are home.

What this calculator assumes — and what it cannot know.
It assumes a rectangle. Your pool probably is not one — perimeter especially drifts on kidneys, lagoons, and freeforms, and perimeter is half the interior-surface formula.
It also cannot see hollow spots, bond-beam condition, or what is around your skimmer — the discoveries that move real quotes. It is a good compass. It is not a map.

What is the interior surface area of a 16 x 32 pool?
About 992 sq ft at 5 ft average depth: a 512 sq ft footprint plus a 96 ft perimeter x 5 ft of wall. Nearly double the footprint — that is the point of this page.
What average depth should I use?
Add your shallow-end and deep-end depths and halve them. A 3 ft / 8 ft pool averages about 5.5 ft. Every foot of average depth adds roughly one perimeter’s worth of square feet.
Why does this not show a price?
Because a price from a rectangle assumption would be a guess wearing a calculator’s clothes. We price measured pools. The button above does that — free.
