Definition guide

Resurfacing vs. replastering: two words, one job mostly.

When the new finish is plaster, resurfacing and replastering usually mean the same job. Resurfacing is the umbrella term for every finish option.

What to look for.

The short answer

Replastering is resurfacing with plaster.

Replastering says the old surface comes out and new plaster goes in. Resurfacing also covers moving to quartz, mini pebble, full pebble, or glass bead.

The real decision

Should you choose plaster again?

If you want anything but white, do not solve that with pigmented plaster. Color belongs in quartz or aggregate systems.

If you are selling soon, white plaster can be the clean value play. If you are staying, aggregate finishes usually make stronger cost-per-year sense.

Same job around it

The drain, prep, and startup do not disappear.

Whatever finish you choose, the pool still drains, gets prepped, receives the new surface, fills, and enters startup. The surrounding sequence is the same.

FAQs

Quick answers.

Is replastering cheaper than resurfacing?
Replastering is resurfacing with plaster, the lowest-upfront finish. Published plaster rates run $6–$8/sq ft (HomeGuide, 2025-04-25).
Can you replaster over old plaster?
Preparation decides everything. Hollow spots, bond, and surface condition decide whether the old surface can stay.
How many times can a pool be replastered?
There is no fixed count. A sound shell can carry new surfaces indefinitely when each cycle is prepped correctly.
