Startup guide

The first 30 days: why startup isn't optional.

Your new surface fills the day it is finished. At that moment it is soft, chemically active, and easier to damage than it will ever be again.

What to look for.

What is happening

Cementitious pool finishes cure under water.

Plaster, quartz, and pebble are cementitious. They cure for about a month, and while they cure the surface wants calcium. Startup chemistry feeds the surface so it does not pull hardness from itself.

That is why the first month looks fussy: brushing, calcium control, continuous fill, and no casual chemical dumping.

Week one

The surface can stain before it is strong.

A leaf, metal in fill water, or a chemical poured in one spot can mark a curing surface. Your contractor is protecting the finish while it is at its most vulnerable.

Most contractors require startup in-house because the manufacturer warranty assumes the startup was done correctly.

Your job

Keep the pool boring for a month.

Keep debris out, wait for your contractor to clear swimmers, do not add anything outside the program, and make sure your weekly pool service knows a startup is in progress.

FAQs

Quick answers.

When can we swim?
Your contractor calls it, often within days of the fill while startup care continues through the full month.
Why is my new plaster dusty?
Early plaster dust during cure is common and managed by brushing and startup chemistry. Persistent dusting after startup is a contractor conversation.
Can I skip startup on a pebble finish?
No. Pebble still has cement curing around the aggregate. Tougher long-term does not mean exempt in month one.

National averages can’t price your pool. They don’t know its size.

Enter your address and we’ll measure your actual pool from satellite imagery — surface area, perimeter, gallons — and price your project the way a premium contractor would. Free, about two minutes, and the measurement is yours either way.
