A surface crack lives in the plaster or pebble layer. A structural crack runs through the finish, waterproofing, and concrete shell.

During leak detection, a technician gets in the pool and places dye at the crack. If the dye gets pulled in, the crack goes through and is leaking. Everything else is educated guessing.

On a Merritt Island seawall lot, a hairline crack looked harmless until the pool was drained. It ran down one side, across the middle, and up the shallow end.
