How to tell your skimmer is old.
Color. Skimmer plastic ages white to cream to yellow to brown, getting more brittle at every step. A browning skimmer is a brittle skimmer, and a brittle skimmer is a leak with a schedule.
One deck-crack pattern is worth knowing: coping, across the skimmer lid, and out toward the deck edge. That usually means soil has been moving nearby, often because water has been getting out.
Mouth leaks
The skimmer mouth meets the pool wall. That joint gets dye-tested with water still in the pool.
Putty is temporary
Two-part epoxy putty might hold two weeks or two years. It is not the actual repair.
What is buried decides
Roots, concrete, soil, and plumbing condition are why the replacement range spreads so wide.

Can a leaking skimmer be repaired instead of replaced?
If the body is sound and the leak is at the mouth, yes: tile off, waterproof, re-tile. If the plastic is brittle and brown, repair is postponing the number.
How do I know if my skimmer is leaking?
A full leak detection answers it definitively. The mouth gets dye-tested with water in the pool. Watch also for the deck-crack pattern and an autofill that runs more than it used to.
Does skimmer replacement damage the deck?
It requires opening the deck, usually a small cut section that gets patched. During a larger remodel, it can often disappear into the job.
