Least expensive finish

Pool Plaster Cost (2026)

Standard white plaster, also called marcite, is the least expensive pool finish, at published rates of $6–$8/sq ft (HomeGuide, 2025-04-25) of interior surface - about $5,952-$7,936 (published rate x 992 sq ft) for a typical 16 x 32 pool's 992 sq ft.

Material

What plaster actually is

Real geometry, assuming a rectangle at 5 ft average depth — your pool isn’t one, which is why we measure.

A troweled blend of white Portland cement and marble dust - the classic pool interior, and the baseline of the industry. Plaster is your pool's waterproofing. It is not a coat of paint over a waterproof shell; concrete is only watertight, and the plaster layer keeps water where it belongs.

Plaster is mixed in small batches on site the day it goes in, by a full crew, and your pool starts filling the same afternoon.

Color warning

Keep it white.

If you’re choosing plaster, choose white. Pigment weakens plaster structurally — a surface that should last 20–30 years may last 10, and the darker the color, the worse the tradeoff. Small-batch mixing invites blotchiness between batches. And every contractor I know excludes color from the warranty; go dark enough and some won’t warranty the plaster at all. Want color? That’s what quartz and pebble are for — there, the color rides in the aggregate, not the cement.

Lifespan

How long it really lasts.

Here’s what fifteen years taught me about lifespan numbers: they’re chemistry numbers, not material numbers. Commercial pools use the same materials as your backyard pool and routinely outlast it — for two reasons. Commercial pools can’t use pigment, which is the maximum-lifespan version of any surface. And their water is monitored daily, often by injection systems that correct drift a drip at a time. Your pool gets a weekly visit, and the tech spikes the chemicals hard enough to last until next week — and that spiking is what eats surfaces. I’ve seen white plaster from the 1980s still looking good under spot-on chemistry, and ten-year-old finishes destroyed by one bad pool guy. So read every range below as “with decent chemistry” — and know that the one-year manufacturer warranty exists because they can’t see your water.

Plaster's honest range: 7-12 years under average residential care, 20-30 under excellent chemistry. It is the most chemistry-sensitive finish on this site, which is why it is both the cheapest and the most often replaced.

Who should pick White plaster / marcite

  • You keep chemistry honest and like the classic smooth, bright look.
  • You may sell within 8 years, where low upfront cost can win the math.
  • Budget is the constraint and the pool needs its waterproofing back now.

Who should not

  • You want color. Go quartz or pebble instead.
  • Your water care is whenever. Plaster punishes that fastest.
  • You want the last resurfacing you do for 20 years without relying on excellent chemistry.

Brands

A word about brands.

You’ll hear brand names — Pebble Tec, StoneScapes, and others. I’ve installed both. Chemically they’re the same product; which one your contractor uses mostly comes down to their distributor relationship, and warranty terms differ by brand and installer certification. Pick the system your contractor installs every week. Don’t pick your contractor to chase a brand.

FAQs

White plaster / marcite questions.

Is plaster the same as marcite?
Yes. Marcite is the trade name for standard white pool plaster. Same material, same job.
Can plaster be applied over the old surface?
Sometimes a bond-coat-over-existing approach is used, but preparation is everything: hollow spots must be chipped, and the surface must be prepped so the new layer bonds.
Why is my plaster quote higher than the lowest online rate?
Two reasons, usually: your quote is priced on interior surface area, walls included, and tiers are real. Premium materials installed to manufacturer spec by a crew that will warranty the work cost more than the minimum bid.
How soon can we swim?
The pool fills the same day plaster goes in, but the surface cures for about 30 days. Your contractor will clear you to swim, typically within days, while startup care continues the full month.

The finish is only one lever

Your actual price still starts with the actual pool.

Measure my pool

National averages can’t price your pool. They don’t know its size.

Enter your address and we’ll measure your actual pool from satellite imagery — surface area, perimeter, gallons — and price your project the way a premium contractor would. Free, about two minutes, and the measurement is yours either way.
